Miami Metromover’s Expansion To South Beach Is Happening

It’s finally happening! After years of back-and-forth between the City of Miami and the City of Miami Beach, the transit loop from the mainland to the beach is coming. NIMBY’s (people who want the change, just not in their backyard) have weighed in, as have the YIMBY’s (people who welcome the change whether in their backyard or not), and despite the fact that some changes will be needed, the new transit link is moving forward.

Previously, the plan was to incorporate a new monorail system to shuttle beachgoers from the mainland and was even proven to be less expensive to build than a Metromover extension, but this is no longer the case.

“When monorail was first proposed, the previous administration presented it as a solution that could save hundreds of millions of dollars over Metromover. In the recent negotiations, however, the price ballooned to $1.3 billion,” said District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “We now believe we can get what the residents want – a one-seat ride between Downtown and the Beach by extending our existing Metromover – at a lower cost. That’s why we’ve decided expanding the Metromover is the best option.”

The plans are already in motion with the Department of Transportation and Public Works staff working to advertise, evaluate and negotiate the new solution by October of this year. The project design and delivery are due in 2024 and construction is set to begin in 2025. By the time Five Park on Miami Beach is open, we should be able to shuttle ourselves over without having to worry about traffic on the Causeway.

“My administration is committed to providing our residents with innovative transit solutions that better connect residents to jobs and opportunity, while delivering maximum value to taxpayers,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I have always supported a one-seat ride for Baylink, and I’m proud that we are now moving forward with a seamless extension of the Metromover to provide the best experience to residents and visitors at a significantly lower cost.”

Won’t that be something?!

About The Brightline

The Brightline is the brand-new, inner-city express train connecting major cities in the Southeastern part of Florida. The Brightline is providing an easier way for people to travel specifically between West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami, with a plan in the near future to also connect further north to Orlando. This new mode of transit between these major cities in South Florida will allow a more reliable and quicker commute for those who commute back and forth between these cities, for locals and visitors alike. For instance, many people who work in Brickell, the financial district of Downtown Miami, live in Fort Lauderdale, so the Brightline will give these people a more convenient and comfortable means to travel to and from work. And, for tourists, especially those who come from places where public transit is a way of life, it will be easier and more convenient for these visitors to visit all of the major cities in South Florida all the way up to Disney World.

Currently, 3 of the 4 state-of-the-art Brightline stations are open: MiamiCentral, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. The Brightline began limited services between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach earlier this year, but has just extended service to Miami with this weekend being the 1st weekend of scheduled services to Miami, beginning May 19th.  The second phase of the Brightline will include a station in Orlando with services estimated to run between Mimi and Orlando in the first quarter of 2021.

Finally…David Beckham Announces Miami MLS Team

After many years of speculation and back-and-forth about whether or not Miami would actually get a professional soccer team, Monday January 29, 2018, David Beckham addressed an audience at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and officially announced that Major League Soccer has awarded a franchise to the Magic City of Miami.

The official announcement came with much enthusiasm as many people, including Beckham, have spent nearly 4 years trying to hammer out the details to bring professional soccer to the global city of Miami. And, although not all of the kinks have been worked out, such as the team name, logo and colors, which will be announced in the next few months, and where they will play until the permanent stadium in Overtown is finished in 2021, it is now truly official that Miami will have a professional soccer team that will begin play in 2020!
