Miami Beach Introduces New Security Measures To Encourage Peaceful Celebrations

March is historically a wild month in Miami Beach, where barrages of young folks descend upon the magic city and party hard for Spring Break. While we are fully aware of our city’s footloose reputation, things have gotten out of hand in recent years and this year’s partygoers are going to experience a new, grown-up version of South Beach.

In an effort to quell the lawless behavior, preparations are being made by law enforcement and city officials for the 2024 Spring Break season. The changes are in effect during the entire month of March, with special restrictions being introduced on “high impact” weekends (March 7-10 and March 14-17).

New Miami Beach Spring Break Regulations – March

On Thursdays through Fridays during the entirety of March, visitors will notice increased staffing of Miami Beach Police, Fire Rescue, Ocean Rescue, Code Compliance, Park Rangers, Parking and Sanitation as well as “Goodwill Ambassadors” to assist visitors. The “Goodwill Ambassadors” are not unlike the Downtown Miami “Outstanding Angels,”  who stroll the streets of Downtown Miami, offering directions and other advice to visitors who may have lost their way.

  • Parking rates will be increased to $30 for visitors in all city parking garages and surface lots in the Entertainment District. These new rates do not apply to Miami Beach Residents, access card holders or authorized employees.
  • The non-resident towing rate is increased to $516. This is roughly twice the normal rate, so please be mindful of your parking space or be prepared to meet the local celebrities/fine residents at South Beach Tow (spoiler alert: they are not fun to deal with at the regular rate, so watch your parking).
  • Liquor stores in the Entertainment District will close at 8pm.
  • Beach entrances along Ocean Drive will be limited to 5th, 10th and 12th Streets. At those locations, expect security checkpoints to ensure prohibited items are not brought onto the sand. Prohibited items include but are not limited to coolers, rafts/inflatables, tables and tents, firearms, fireworks and glass. The beach is also an alcohol and smoke-free environment.
  • The beach entrances will close at 6pm sharp.
  • Amplified music is prohibited without a city-issued permit.

High Impact Weekends (March 7-10 and March 14-17)

  • The Miami Beach Police Department will implement a License Plate Reader (LPR) on the eastbound lanes of the MacArthur Causeway and the Julia Tuttle Causeway starting at 5pm. This will reduce the number of lanes available for use, so expect delays. These License Plate Readers will identify the vehicles in the event of any serious or violent offenders and assist with the recovery of stolen vehicles. The License Plate Readers will also be implemented on March 22-24th along 5th Street.
  • Parking rates will be raised to $100 for city parking garages and surface lots in the Entertainment District (see map). The entry to these garages will be restricted from 6pm until 7am and Miami Beach Police Department officers will be posted at each city-owned garage all weekend. These rates and closures do not affect residents, access card holders or authorized employees.
  • All sidewalk seating on Ocean Drive will be closed during these weekends. This also affects sidewalk cafes along the main drag.
  • DUI sobriety checkpoints are to be introduced.
  • There will be no use of golf carts, low-speed vehicles, slingshots, motorized scooters, mopeds, small motorcycles or motorized bicycles during this time.
  • Barricades will be added to Ocean Drive in order to reduce pedestrians coming into contact with vehicles. Ocean Drive will be accessible only via 13th Street as an entry and 5th Street as an exit. There is no parking on Ocean Drive.

Parking

In order to reduce the impact of Miami Beach and South Beach residents during this time, enhanced parking enforcement and towing are to be expected. Be sure to check the signage for your parking spot if you find one and remember: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. South Beach Tow does not play.

Miami Beach Trolley Service

To help visitors get around despite the new regulations, the Miami Beach citywide trolley service will be available for augmented hours. They will have additional trolleys for the South Beach Loops A and B as well as two additional trolleys for the Collins Avenue Express route. These services are available free of charge from 8am to 1am.

Additional information can be found on the City of Miami Beach’s “Break Up with Spring Break” page.

While we understand that these regulations are not fun at all, they will help to alleviate some of the past problems that Spring Break has brought. In 2023 alone, there were two fatal shootings and almost 500 arrests. We hope that Miami Beach’s visitors have a lovely time this year with our city and please party responsibly.

Miami Metromover’s Expansion To South Beach Is Happening

It’s finally happening! After years of back-and-forth between the City of Miami and the City of Miami Beach, the transit loop from the mainland to the beach is coming. NIMBY’s (people who want the change, just not in their backyard) have weighed in, as have the YIMBY’s (people who welcome the change whether in their backyard or not), and despite the fact that some changes will be needed, the new transit link is moving forward.

Previously, the plan was to incorporate a new monorail system to shuttle beachgoers from the mainland and was even proven to be less expensive to build than a Metromover extension, but this is no longer the case.

“When monorail was first proposed, the previous administration presented it as a solution that could save hundreds of millions of dollars over Metromover. In the recent negotiations, however, the price ballooned to $1.3 billion,” said District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins. “We now believe we can get what the residents want – a one-seat ride between Downtown and the Beach by extending our existing Metromover – at a lower cost. That’s why we’ve decided expanding the Metromover is the best option.”

The plans are already in motion with the Department of Transportation and Public Works staff working to advertise, evaluate and negotiate the new solution by October of this year. The project design and delivery are due in 2024 and construction is set to begin in 2025. By the time Five Park on Miami Beach is open, we should be able to shuttle ourselves over without having to worry about traffic on the Causeway.

“My administration is committed to providing our residents with innovative transit solutions that better connect residents to jobs and opportunity, while delivering maximum value to taxpayers,” said Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I have always supported a one-seat ride for Baylink, and I’m proud that we are now moving forward with a seamless extension of the Metromover to provide the best experience to residents and visitors at a significantly lower cost.”

Won’t that be something?!

Canopy Park At Five Park Miami Beach Is Officially Open

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Canopy Park, the much-anticipated 3-acre public park associated with Five Park Miami Beach at 5th and Alton is officially open! Here is a breakdown of what to expect from Miami Beach’s newest public park.

Monstrum Playground

Hailing from Denmark, Monstrum prides itself on creating playscapes for people of all ages that are designed to spark the imagination of whoever is experiencing the space. At Canopy Park, the team has designed “Rosie The Elephant’s Playground.”  It features 2 climbing features (one for smaller children and one for bigger/more active kids) and 2 slides. The small slide is designed to resemble a caterpillar, while the larger slide features a play area that enters an elephant and a larger tube slide that comes out of the elephant. Fun!

Canopy Park at Five Park Million Orchid Project Fairchild

Fairchild Botanical Gardens’ Million Orchid Project

Five Park, in partnership with Fairchild Botanical Gardens, is debuting a Miami Beach botanical garden. The first installation will feature 600 blooming orchid plants throughout the park grounds. Different installations are expected to rotate throughout the seasons, so be sure to look out for different tropical blooms throughout the park as you stroll or jog through.

Art Installations

Contemporary sculptor Mark Handforth is showcasing his piece titled “Snow White” as the debut art installation of the park. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Great Britain, Mr Handforth now resides and works in Miami. He is very renowned for his large-scale sculptures in public spaces around the globe. We are very happy to see local artists have the opportunity to showcase their creations.

Canopy Park at Five Park Dog Park

The Dog Park

The kiddos and grownups can’t be the only ones to have fun, our doggos need a space to romp as well, and they certainly have one here! The fenced and professionally landscaped area offers plenty of room for the pups to run, chase balls (or their own tails, as the case sometimes may be), seating areas for the dog parents and cleanup stations that we are hopeful everyone utilizes. Seriously though. Be a good neighbor. Pick up after your dog.

Outdoor Gym

While your kids are spending their energy at the Monstrum playground and Fido is running in circles throughout the oval-shaped dog park, you can also pump some iron at the outdoor gym. Jogging is available throughout the park, but there is also a series of strength training exercise options for all to use.

Event Lawn

Once the whole family is sufficiently exhausted, pass by the event lawn to have a picnic, bask in the sunshine, visit with friends, whatever you feel on that day. This grassy knoll will also host small cultural events from time to time, so make sure to pay attention to news announcements in the area.

Retail Pavilion (coming soon)

Once construction wraps up and retailers have a chance to finish out their spaces, a retail pavilion will offer snacks, juices, coffees, smoothies, ice cream, and all sorts of options for those visiting the park. We don’t yet have confirmation of which retailers will be present, but it will certainly be something that is on-brand with the other amenities offered in the park.

Bioswale “Dry River”

Before the Miami-haters have a chance to bring up high tides and rainwater runoff from the development, we must point out that every precaution is being taken to ensure that the park remains beautiful and useful for decades to come. A channel has been designed through the project and planted to maintain the aesthetics of the park. This is not your storm sewer that you remember from the midwest or New York. No sir. This is an integrated and planted dry river that will divert storm water from the bay and reduce flooding.

A 25,000-gallon cistern will capture excess runoff during major storm events and irrigate plantings throughout the year with a capacity to irrigate the park completely on collected rainwater for one week before needing replenishment.” Green infrastructure solutions include bioswales and rain gardens for site filtration and to manage rainwater. How about that!

The Bridge

Connecting Canopy Park to South of Fifth for pedestrians was also previously addressed. Internationally-acclaimed French artist Daniel Buren was tapped to design a pedestrian bridge that connects the park to South of Fifth over the MacArthur Causeway, allowing visitors to walk to additional restaurants, the Miami Beach Marina, and the SoFi Beachwalk.

The Team

Five Park Miami Beach is being developed by Terra Group, the team behind the largely successful Park Grove and Grove at Grand Bay in Coconut Grove. Arquitectonica, who is responsible for the lion’s share of high rise designs throughout Miami and Miami Beach are in charge of the tower design, but the real standout of Canopy Park Miami Beach is ArquitectonicaGEO.

ArquitectonicaGEO is the landscape architecture leg of Arquitectonica and are responsible for some of the most pristine gardens in new developments and public spaces in Miami-Dade. Some of my personal favorites of their work include Brickell City Centre, the East Hotel in Brickell City Centre (including Sugar, the rooftop lounge), the new Virgin Voyages cruise terminal at Port of Miami, the Perez Art Museum (PAMM), 57 Ocean in mid-beach Miami Beach, the Ritz Carlton Sunny Isles, Hyde Midtown, Aria on the Bay in Edgewater, and Brickell Heights in the Brickell financial district. This is certainly not the first rodeo for ArquitectonicaGEO.

Five Park Tower is currently under construction. When completed, it will reach 44 stories and 546-feet. There will be a total of only 98 residences, ranging in size from a 1,434sf 2 bedroom up to a 5 bedroom over 6,000sf. Each residence has a private elevator and either a park, bay or ocean view. Prices start at $2.6 million.

If you are interested in a presentation of the project with special pricing, please contact Michael Light, Broker and Executive Director of Luxury Sales at Douglas Elliman. You may reach Michael directly at (786) 566-1700 or via email at michael@miamiluxuryhomes.com.

South Beach Wine and Food Festival Celebrates its 21st Year

One of Miami’s most elegantly debaucherous events has come of age. The South Beach Wine and Food Festival has bestowed itself upon us for the 21st year, and my has it grown! Whether you want to mingle and rub elbows with celebrity chefs, fellow foodies, mixologists and other wine snobs, or just sip rose and watch celebrities, SBWFF is never a disappointment. This year is no different.

The white tents descended upon the sand on Miami Beach this last weekend, from Thursday February 24-Sunday February 27 and left no one in want. There were over 90 events including chef-curated dinners, tastings and food seminars with celebrity chefs. In addition to what was going on in the sand, there were a ton of events running parallel to the official festival.

World Red Eye: Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink 15th Anniversary Dinner hosted by Michael Schwartz

The event actually began as an event called the Florida Extravaganza in the early aughts. People would bring wines from all over the world and Miami restaurants would bring out their items to pair with the wines. Over the years, it has become an actual extravaganza with the likes of Jose Andres, Guy Fieri, Bobby Flay, and who can forget Paula Deen riding things?

This year other celebrities also hosted events, including Eva Longoria, Adam Levine and his wife Behati Prinsloo, French Montana and Kate Hudson. Ticket sales benefit the FIU School of Hospitality and Tourism Management and the event grows each year. You can find more photos of the events here.

What is South Beach’s Famed Retro ‘Art Deco’ Architecture?

Miami Beach is undeniably a melting pot of different architectural work and design, but it is certainly most famous for its vibrant, retro-fabulous “Art Deco”-style. So, what is Art Deco???

Art Deco, which is the famed architecture in the heart of South Beach, is not only an architectural style, but is a global design aesthetic that first trended in Paris in 1925. Art Deco then spread worldwide during the 1920’s through the early 40’s and popularized during this time period in Miami Beach.

The Art Deco style is a modern take on neoclassical, one that is equally historic and retro and appealing to the eye. Art Deco is marked by its characteristic bright vibrant colors, elaborate embellishments such as glass blocks to porthole windows and prominent structural gems like geometric statues or fountains. Art Deco infuses artistic touches into functional objects, which is different from fine arts where the works have no practical purpose beyond the aesthetic viewing.

Most of the Art Deco buildings in Miami Beach, including over 800 structures built during the 1930’s and early ‘40’s, are considered to be Streamline Moderne, which is the American version of Art Deco that was a pared, sleek version of the more elaborate European-style of Art Deco. And, as Miami loves to put its own spin on things, it did the same with the Art Deco design, as it incorporated its tropical environment and seaside influences complimenting the Miami Art Deco scene with aquatic and floral embellishments, nautical designs and pastel colors, what some may call ‘Tropical Deco.’

Where is the Art Deco District in Miami Beach???

The Art Deco District in the heart of South Beach is located between 6th and 23rd Street along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue. So, if you find yourself strolling along one of these celebrated streets, you will notice the Art Deco architecture on the exterior façade of many of the buildings, but some of the most quintessential Art Deco buildings in South Beach are The Colony Hotel, Park Central Hotel, Essex House, The Clevelander, The Delano, The Webster, The Breakwater, The Raleigh and The Tides.

For more information on Art Deco preservation, history, attractions, etc., you can check out the full-service Art Deco Welcome Center located at 1001 Ocean Drive and enjoy guided tours and much more!
