Finally…David Beckham Announces Miami MLS Team

After many years of speculation and back-and-forth about whether or not Miami would actually get a professional soccer team, Monday January 29, 2018, David Beckham addressed an audience at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts and officially announced that Major League Soccer has awarded a franchise to the Magic City of Miami.

The official announcement came with much enthusiasm as many people, including Beckham, have spent nearly 4 years trying to hammer out the details to bring professional soccer to the global city of Miami. And, although not all of the kinks have been worked out, such as the team name, logo and colors, which will be announced in the next few months, and where they will play until the permanent stadium in Overtown is finished in 2021, it is now truly official that Miami will have a professional soccer team that will begin play in 2020!

David Beckham Finds Home for Soccer Stadium in Overtown Neighborhood

After multiple failed attempts to buy land in Miami for his soccer stadium, soccer superstar David Beckham and his partners, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure, sports executive Tim Leiweke and producer Simon Fuller have finally found a home for their soccer stadium in Overtown.

Beckham and his partners have put approximately 9 acres of land under contract, with the sellers being Miami-Dade County and private landowners, with plans to build a 30,000-seat stadium at 650 N.W. 8th Street in the Overtown neighborhood of Greater Downtown Miami.

The plans have become reality since the governing board of Major League Soccer (MLS) approved an expansion that includes Miami and endorsed the proposed stadium’s location in Overtown. MLS currently has 20 teams, so the Miami Beckham United will be one of four new teams in MLS expansion by 2020, and MLS seems to be quite happy about bringing Major League Soccer to the exciting Magic City.

Although MLS seems happy about Beckham’s mega stadium in Overtown, it seems that there are many different reactions amongst local Miamians. So, what do you think?

David Beckham Bringing his Talents to Downtown Miami?

David Beckham and LeBron James

David Beckham and LeBron James

We all know the famous “I’m bringing my talents to South Beach” line by LeBron James (even though he was bringing his talents to Miami, NOT South Beach). It seems as if David Beckham may have this same idea, but for very different reasons. Everyone wants in on the redevelopment and expansion of Downtown Miami, now count Beckham among them. According to a source close to the negotiations, Beckham has chosen Miami as the destination for his expansion Major League Soccer (“MLS”) club, with designs on building a stadium in Miami’s urban core.

Beckham, exercising an option to become an MLS team owner for the discounted rate of $25 million, an incentive given to him as part of a deal that brought him to the L.A. Galaxy in 2007, is attracted to Miami as “it excites him and in turn is very excitable”. Beckham is partnering with British entrepreneur Simon Fuller, best known for developing American Idol, and the ownership group eventually wants a purpose-built stadium in Miami’s urban core.

Miami, also known as the “Gateway to the Americas”, with its large and growing Latin American population, will be a fitting home for the international community’s most popular sport. Further, the desire to choose Miami’s urban core speaks to the success of the redevelopment and future proposed development of Downtown Miami and the surrounding neighborhoods…it is certainly a far cry from the condition the area was in a decade ago.

I am a huge fan of anything that adds value to Downtown Miami, and a MLS stadium would do just that. Between this idea and the proposed Miami Worldcenter, Downtown Miami condos could be primed for an unimaginable surge in value over the next decade. With the bottom of the Miami Real Estate market clearly behind us, now is the time to buy without hesitation.
