The Underline 10-Mile Linear Park

The Underline 10-Mile Linear Park

The highly-anticipated 10-mile linear park that was temporarily named the GreenLink Project has been officially named The Underline!  The linear park that will stretch from Brickell to Dadeland is currently being branded as The Underline,  According to CBS Miami, “The Underline’s new name, logo and website are all ‘Wow’ reflecting the iconic nature of the vision and scale of the project,” said Meg Daly, Founder of Friends of The Underline.

The Underline will positively transform approximately 10 miles of underutilized land under the Miami Metrorail into a beautiful, linear, urban park and trail that is fully integrated into the Miami-Dade transit system.  The Underline will be a great addition to Miami and will be proof that Miami has a lot of great, breakthrough ideas and innovation.  Many people are hopeful and positive that The Underline will have a remarkable impact on further building Miami’s urban core into a walkable, transit-friendly city.

GreenLink Project – 10-mile Linear Park

GREENLINK PROJECT

GreenLink Project, later to be renamed, will completely transform the land beneath the Metrorail from the Brickell Metrorail Station all the way to Dadeland South Station into a continuous, 10-mile pathway used for walking, biking and exercise and a linear park.  This 10-mile linear park would be the largest ever linear park!

GreenLink Project…10-Mile Linear Park in Miami?

GreenLink Project - 10-Mile Linear Park

A non-profit organization in South Florida referred to as the Friends of GreenLink is collaborating with Miami-Dade County Parks and Transit Departments to set in motion a proposal, the GreenLink Project, to completely transform the land beneath the Metrorail into a continuous, 10-mile path used for walking, biking and exercise and a linear park, from the Brickell Metrorail Station all the way to the Dadeland South Station—creating the biggest linear park ever.

This group visualizes that the GreenLink Project will effortlessly continue through each of the 8 transit stations within the 10-mile stretch of land making certain that everyone has constant access to the beautiful park. “The vision is to connect eight transit stations to one linear park,” said Meg Daly, GreenLink Park’s founder to CBS Miami.

The group cited 2 similar projects, The High Line in New York City and Chicago’s 606, that positively affected their communities. The High Line, which cost about $180 million to build, generated an estimated $3 Billion in real estate investments in the New York City area and completely transformed the Chelsea and Meatpacking neighborhoods, while Chicago’s 606 will connect 4 different neighborhoods and approximately 80,000 residents with a 3-mile linear park. These 2 projects have helped pave the way for Miami’s upcoming project. The proposed 10-mile linear park, here in Miami, would completely change Miami and affect approximately 400,000 people directly along the proposed GreenLink Project and would increase property values.

With respect to funding of the project, the money is coming in. GreenLink is seeking funding from the private and public sectors. So far, the project has approximately $2 Million in commitments, with the Knight Foundation being on board.

According to Daly, the GreenLink Project could possibly break ground at the end of 2014 and be done in 5-10 years, leaning more toward the 10-year mark.

According to GreenLink, the goals of this 10-mile linear park would be to:

  • Boost the usage of the Metrorail
  • Promote exercise
  • Be more green with more public green areas
  • Make an economic impact with current estimates at approximately $800 Million per year
  • Provide a beautified US-1
  • Safely connect communities

The GreenLink Project seems like it would be a win-win for the city of Miami!
