Blue Starlight Drive-In Coconut Grove Grand Opening Flyer

Coconut Grove residents will soon be able to enjoy a drive-in movie theatre in the nestled streets of Coconut Grove thanks to Josh Frank.  Josh Frank is an Austin, Texas native who brought his nostalgic concept to Wynwood in 2013 by opening up the Blue Starlight drive-in movie theatre. Because of the trendy atmosphere in Wynwood, Frank decided to move the Blue Starlight drive-in to a more family-like community that would appreciate his vintage drive-in experience.

As a mini-urban drive-in theatre, Blue Starlight, which will find its new home in the back lot of the Coconut Grove Playhouse, will fit right into Coconut Grove, with its cozy, country-esque drive-in experience. Introducing Blue Starlight into the Coconut Grove community will give Coconut Grove residents the best of both worlds…that nostalgic, historical, drive-in feel without the long drive or flight to the countryside.

In fact, Frank seems to have no doubt that Coconut Grove is the perfect location for his drive-in of the future.  “The Grove has an authentic coolness that wasn’t manufactured or planned.  It just is, and always has been, a place for art, culture and friendly laid back vibes,” said Frank, according to the Coconut Grove Grapevine.

The new Coconut Grove location will be much larger than the Wynwood location.  The Coconut Grove spot will comfortably accommodate 30 – 35 cars and will have plenty of leg-room for all of the pedestrians strolling into the drive-in theatre with their chairs and blankets.  Additionally, the vintage-themed Blue Starlight will feature concession stands with the old time favorites, such as popcorn and nachos, but will also offer more modern treats such as smores.

The grand opening of the Blue Starlight in Coconut Grove will be on June 23, 2014.  Shows will be held on Monday through Thursday nights, and the movies will be shown on a 30’ x 20’ screen which will be placed against the wall between the drive-in and the Coconut Grove Playhouse.  Patrons will have their choice of listening to the movies from vintage car window speakers or the more modern FM radio sound.

Movie times are listed below, but are subject to change.  Please note that the gates will open 1 hour and 15 minutes before showtime for the first feature and 45 minutes before showtime for the second feature of the night.  Movie-goers must show up no later than 15 minutes before showtime.
