Coral Gables is definitely following suit behind surrounding areas of Miami. South Floridians want a more pedestrian-friendly, “green” environment. So, Coral Gables is planning to spend almost $20 Million in renovations for a 4-block stretch of the historical Miracle Mile.
Coral Gables hired New York based design firm, Cooper, Robertson & Partners to revitalize Miracle Mile. The plan to improve Miracle Mile was approved by city commissioners in August to allow more green space and improved pedestrian areas which will include wider sidewalks, outdoor dining areas, mini park-like areas and no more 45-degree-angled parking spots. Smartly, the plan is to abolish the wasted 45-degree-angled parking spaces and include only parallel spots along the 4-block stretch of Coral Way. In addition, Giralda Avenue will become curbless allowing the city of Coral Gables the option of closing the road to vehicles during certain events.
The overall changes and transformation of the 4-block stretch of Miracle Mile are welcomed by residents in Coral Gables and surrounding areas to allow a more pedestrian-friendly “green” area with lots of outdoor lounging furniture for cafes and restaurants. It will positively transform the look of the historic street!
