FAA Loosens Drone Rules—Good for Miami Real Estate Marketing

Thank goodness the FAA came to their senses and finally introduced new regulations that loosen drone rules allowing real estate agents to not have to jump through hoops to market properties for their clients.

I purchased my drone back in April 2014 to begin using it for real estate marketing. Shortly thereafter, the FAA enacted these crazy regulations forcing real estate agents to apply for a Section 333 exemption with the FAA to legally use a drone for real estate marketing (in other words, a “pay to play” B.S. regulation). But the new rules, which will take effect in August of this year, no longer require a Section 333 exemption for real estate agents to use drones for marketing purposes.

Specifically, I had the intention of using my drone to provide my developer clients with aerial views of properties that they were debating to purchase for redevelopment, for my clients looking to purchase pre-construction condos to allow them to get a real feel of what their actual view would be from their respective purchase, for my listings to create videos of properties from above and showcase highlights of certain neighborhoods to show out-of-town buyers.  However, I was simply too busy to jump through hoops with the FAA to get permission to use my drone, so I just didn’t.

Well, at least the rules came after one of my videos showcasing Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove was shown on Good Morning America.

So, the official rule changes are exciting for my business and my clients as I will be able to use my drone again to market properties and to assist various buyers in their decision-making process.

Good Morning America Features Miami Luxury Homes’ Drone Video!

Last night, I received an email from a producer at ABC News Good Morning America telling me that Good Morning America is doing a series on drones this week.  She told me that she was working on a tape piece highlighting cool things people are doing with drones and the piece will mention real estate. The producer liked my drone video that I posted of Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove back in May of 2014.  So, she asked me for my permission to use the video for Good Morning America and across all of the ABC News platforms.  I was flattered and excited.  Even though it is a brief feature of real estate in Miami, to have my work and my name flagged across the screen on Good Morning America is awesome!

Look! Up In The Sky! It’s A Miami Real Estate Drone!

As reported by Inman News, Drones are Ready for real estate. As a Miami real estate agent and a huge fan of innovative technology, I just had to dive in head first. I recently purchased a DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ after reading many articles about how this third generation system has a 14 MP camera, which is capable of capturing 1080 HD video with a rate of 30 fps and a 3-way gimbal, which gives you buttery-smooth, crystal-clear videos. Here, is the first video that I shot using my real estate drone. It is a video of Kennedy Park in Coconut Grove, Florida, which is close to my home:

As you watch my drone video of Kennedy Park*, please understand that this is the very first time that I have ever used any remote controlled quadcopter! As you can see, the video is very clear and stable. Even though my DJI Phantom is rated to climb to 1,000 feet, I was not bold enough to attempt that on my very first flight. I filmed Kennedy Park at 170′, 250′ and then finally at 350′ up.

Since most of my Miami real estate buyers are clients that are relocating to Miami, it is important that they understand what they are buying and more importantly, the community where they are buying. What better way to show off a property than to display it from every angle…especially from high above!

Consider this…you are interested in homes in Coconut Grove, but you are currently in NYC. You want to know how close a specific Coconut Grove home is to the water…Downtown Miami, Miami Beach, etc.. You could pull up Google Maps, but that is boring. My solution? Boom! I send my drone up to 350′ above the home and shoot you a 360° real estate drone video that will show you the home and all of its surroundings.

What about sellers? When I list your property, I will shoot a custom Miami real estate drone video showcasing your home and its proximity to all of the sights that Miami has to offer. Buyers will be more drawn to view your home in person if they have seen an aerial tour of your property and all of its beautiful surroundings.
