Every year, experts around the country pick their top home design trends for the year, and 2017 is no different. Each of the following leading news sources wrote an article detailing their picks for the top home design trends in 2017:
After reading these 5 articles, I decided to put together a shorter list of home design trends that would be more fitting for our South Florida market. So, to reflect our chic, vibrant styles in Miami, see our Top 12 picks for home design trends in 2017, and you will notice…2017 is a colorful year!
1. Greenery Pops. Greenery, Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year (15-0343), is a bright, vibrant and lush color that will allow a homeowner to brighten up their home with a natural hue that brings a zest to the space while complimenting warm wood tones. This color is a perfect “pop” color for Miami’s natural tropical backdrop.
2. Go for Poised Taupe or Shadow. Gray has been the trendiest color for the past few years, but 2017 seems to bring a small change to the normal gray hues…perfect for Miami style. What is “Poised Taupe” and “Shadow”? Poised Taupe (SW 6039) is the Sherwin William’s color of the year and Shadow (2117-30) is the Benjamin Moore color of the year. If you look at the picture below, both colors are grayish, but Poised Taupe is an Earthen brown color combined with conservative gray which results in a woodsy and complex neutral color, while Shadow hones a more neutral tone that gives warmth to a room.

3. Beige Gets a Green Light. Even though gray is still probably the most popular home color in Miami, some homeowners may want a slightly brighter color that still creates a warm and cozy atmosphere, which is where beige comes into play.
4. Compliment White with Off-White. When you think of a modern house in Miami, the color “white” immediately pops into your brain…white couches, white glass flooring, white walls, white bedding, and the list goes on and on. But, Forbes made a perfect suggestion for Miami’s all-white home palette…compliment white with off-white. Balance an all-white modern palette with creamy tones, off-whites and natural linens.
5. Romantic and Dramatic Bedroom Colors. Inman pointed out that neutral tones are popular for common areas in the home, but 2017 is bringing more romantic colors to the bedrooms. Deep Ruby Red is a sexy color for a master bedroom and a rich Caramel is perfect for a guest bedroom.
6. Amenities Galore. Well, this is definitely relevant to Miami because we live in the world of amenities, whether in a condo or a house. The experts suggest more people will create human docking stations, built-in bars and transforming offices, but in Miami amenities galore is more like extravagant waterslides in a waterfront home like in the picture below, or a full-size basketball court or soccer field and a master bedroom suite that actually resembles a home inside of a home with a kitchen, living room, spa and all!

7. Dress up Your Walls. This seems fitting for Miami…hexagonal tile backsplashes, marble wallpaper and eccentric picture frames such as floating acrylic frames.
8. Flashy is Out and Muted Metal Finishes In. Flashy is out, and Miami in the same sentence, may sound like a complete oxymoron, but in this case it seems to be true. So, as WSJ and Forbes suggests, maybe try some oxidized metals, matte glazes and warm antique-y brass like satin or brushed brass in your home.
9. Spice up Your Living Room. Add some cool pieces of furniture, statement rugs and opulent accessories like throw pillows and blankets in fun jewel-toned colors such as sapphire blue and emerald green.
10. Hardworking Kitchen Storage Walls. Forbes makes a great suggestion of strategically placing all of the kitchen storage cabinets on one wall to free up the rest of the space, creating a breezy look and feel. Unfortunately, in Miami, we sometimes get carried away with what looks chic, but is not so functional. This design trend is perfect for Miami condos that have a smaller space but still need storage.
11. White and Wood Kitchens. Well, this has been popular for a few years now in Miami and it seems to be a growing trend that’s here to stay for a while.
12. Bringing the Outside In. Developers have really adhered to this design idea a lot in the past few years in Miami by constructing wall systems like NanaWalls, which fully “collapse” allowing the inside & outside to become one. This will most likely remain a trend in Miami, and that should be no surprise since Miami offers such natural park-like landscaping and tropical foliage…why wouldn’t developers take advantage of this?
