In order to accomplish this, the Climate Ribbon™ was designed for 3 main benefits: ventilation so that air conditioning is not needed in the shopping center’s public areas, protection from inclement weather and solar shading for the brightest and hottest times of the day.

Brickell City Centre’s innovative environmental management system, Climate Ribbon™, was specifically designed to protect consumers from bad weather, capture ocean and bay breezes to control air flow and temperature, collect rainwater for recycle and allow visitors to enjoy sunlight in an open-air experience. • A surface consisting of a dynamic series of flat, inclined planes placed at variable angles; the placement of each plane is the result of cautious analysis of sun paths, wind patterns and the need for flexibility in the structure.
• Rainwater is easily drained into storage cisterns for reuse.
• Roof planes supported by a white, smooth steel frame structure.
• A glossy covering provides rain protection and also acts as a partial filter for solar radiation.
• Inside the retail shopping center, a continuous series of dramatic fabric ‘blades’ provides efficient sun shading. The blades vary in height and angle in response to the angle of the sun’s rays, while maximizing views of the sky, thereby providing a sheltered, but open-air environment decorating the interior of the retail center with natural sunlight throughout the day.
• Toward the eastern end of Brickell City Centre, the Climate Ribbon™ subtly gets higher to create a ‘scoop’ that captures trade winds in the summertime. Other parts of the structure act as deflectors or additional ‘scoops’, ensuring that a flow of air keeps the temperature comfortable throughout the public spaces.
